Neighborhood Roots Workshop Series

All workshops are free and open to the community.  No need to sign up for most workshops, just come with a smile.  We are always looking for workshop leaders.  If you are interested in sharing your knowledge with the community, email Liz Quinn.


GARDEN RISE & SHINE
Saturdays: 8:45-9:30am at the Archibald Neighborhood Garden
The sessions are led by a rotating group of instructors who lead a combination of breathing exercises, walking/standing meditation, energizing movements, stretches, self-massage, yoga, tai chi, or qi gong. A beautiful, fun, and healthful way to begin the day and, our good energy just might help the plants grow better too! Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a towel to sit on. No previous experience necessary; please let instructor know about any limiting health conditions at the beginning of class. Children over 10 accompanied by an adult are welcome.

FOOD PRESERVATION BY BLANCHING & FREEZING
10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 @ Riverside Apartments Community Room, 669 Riverside Ave.

TOMATO CANNING & FREEZING
6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 @ the Chubby Muffin
Learn how to can fresh tomatoes for the winter months and prepare them for the freezer, too. Classes are at the Chubby Muffin on Oak Street/corner of Intervale Ave. Sign up at City Market's Customer Service desk.

COMMUNITY COMPOSTING

6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16 @ at Buell Street Neighborhood Garden, behind 72 Buell Street
Will Bennington presents this interactive overview of the basics of composting. He will discuss the importance of composting, and how to build and maintain a compost pile. The workshop will dissect the health of the Buell St Garden’s current compost and use workshop participants’ help to build a new compost system. Please bring organic matter to contribute to the new compost (food scraps, no meat please). There will be a potluck dinner for after the workshop. ORGANIC PEST MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
New Date TBA: 10am @ the Riverside Ave. Apartments Community Room located at 669 Riverside Avenue, across from the garden. This workshop will provide useful information about how to identify the good bugs and how to manage bad bugs that are damaging to our plants.
